Useless but essential pop culture tidbits and trivia from the worlds of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror that will not reverse the effects of Global Warming.

Character actor Clancy Brown is quite a familiar face in the movies and on television and may be most widely known for his role as corrupt and abusive Captain of the prison guard Byron Hadley in the critically acclaimed movie The Shawshank Redemption. But did you know that he has an extensive resume in the Science Fiction and Fantasy genre including one role you probably would have never guessed he has lent his talent to?

Early in his career he showed up as Rawhide, one of the Hong Kong Cavaliers in The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension (1984). Two years later, he chewed up the role as the main heavy Kurgan in the first (and best) Highlander movie. He then showed up as Career Sergeant Zim in 1997’s Starship Troopers and also voiced the character in the animated spin-off series Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles (1999). His other television roles in the genre include the NBC series Earth 2 (1994) along with his standout performance as Brother Justin Crowe in the excellent HBO supernatural series Carnivàle (2003). He has also guest starred on any of a number of television shows including his memorable role as Dharma agent Kelvin Joe Inman on Lost, who crossed paths with both Sayid and Desmond. Along with his acting roles, Brown has stayed busy with voice over roles in animation providing the voices of many characters including Lex Luther and Mr. Freeze from the Batman, Justice League, and Superman shows. And most surprising of all, the one you least expected, Clancy Brown has been the voice of the irascible Mr. Crabs on Nickelodeon’s Spongebob Squarepants since that show debuted in 1999. If you are a Spongebob fan (and we definitely love the little guy), you may never look at the owner of the Krusty Krab the same way again!
