Classic Sci Fi Trailers: Revisiting those tantalizing clips of yesteryear teasing great sci fi/fantasy adventures on television and in the movies.

A long time ago, before George Lucas was a Hollywood billionaire-mogul (and before he retrofitted this into “Episode IV” of his grand space epic), this little trailer teased audiences of something new and magical just over the horizon.  In retrospect, it seems rather cheesy (with its choppy transitions and the Star Wars logo slowly advancing throughout the clip) and doesn’t quite measure up to modern-day trailers (which have become an art form all unto themselves), and it also doesn’t quite do justice to the story.  Plus, you have to wonder if the narrator actually saw the movie when he claims “somewhere in space this could all be happening right now”, seeing as the very first thing we see in the movie are the now immortal words “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away . . . “  But then he just said what they told him to say.  And we recall seeing this trailer way back when, sensing the magic seething beneath its surface and realizing this was much more than just another cheesy sci fi B-flick.  We knew that this heralded the arrival of something huge and we eagerly waited for that day when we would stand in that long line (which we didn’t expect but which we tolerated) to see the film that would help change it all for the sci fi genre.
