FOX exec Kevin Reilly recently told reporters that Fringe is losing money for the network and all indications are that the show will get cancelled after this season. Joshua Jackson (who plays Peter Bishop in the show) has said that the network should allow the writers the chance to give the show a proper conclusion, and we concur. So we have started up the inevitable petition to give the fans of the show a chance to voice their opinions to the network. This is not a “Save My Show” campaign, though, just a grassroots effort to see that the show gets the resolution that it deserves.

We are currently in the winter hiatus when most shows are in re-runs or taking a break.  But the season kicks off again the first week of January, and we have the full schedule for all of the science fiction and fantasy shows.  This will include five new shows: Alcatraz and Touch from FOX, Lost Girl from Syfy, The River from ABC, and the animated series Blade from G4.  Also, Syfy’s Being Human and HBO’s Game of Thrones both return for their second seasons.  And all of the Fall shows will be starting back up as well (no genre cancellations so far!) beginning in January and continuing into the Spring months.  You can see the full schedule over at our Sci Fi TV Page.  And check back on a regular basis as the scheduled dates and times can change with little or no notice.  Also, watch our Cancellation Watch column for Johnny Jay’s mid-season predictions on which shows will survive and which shows can expect to face the network executioners by season end.

Mid-Season Sci Fi TV Schedule

The New Year is almost upon us and that means a whole slew of new science fiction and fantasy movies set to hit the theaters. The first four months of the year are not quite as heralded as the Summer Blockbuster Season, but the months of January through April of 2012 will deliver their fare share of notable genre entries which will include titles like Underworld: Awakening, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, John Carter, Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, and Joss Whedon’s Cabin in the Woods. The upfronts, when the networks announce their schedules for the upcoming season, do not get started until Monday, but that has not stopped the announcements from coming fast and furious.  Following is a quick round up of what we have heard so far.  I’ll take more time to delve into this next week once everything has been finalized, but wanted to go ahead and summarize this week’s activity now.  And keep an eye on our Twitter Page and the Sci Fi Scroll for more breaking announcements.

Renewals:

Chuck – In a sneaky move, NBC renewed and cancelled Chuck in the same stroke.  They have greenlighted a thirteen episode fifth season but claim it will be the show’s last.  That let’s them extend the syndication package and get some more DVD sales while also softening the eventual to those diehard Chuck fans.

Nikita – I heard word that this one would get renewed for a second season, but unless I missed it, I did not see a confirmation.  So consider it most likely renewed.

Cancellations:

No big surprises here.  ABC cancelled V and No Ordinary Family, FOX cancelled Human Target, and NBC cancelled The Event.  There’s no official word on The Cape, but do you really think that one has any chance of coming back?

Pickups:

NBC picked up Grimm and Awake.  An early announcement suggested they would pick up David E. Kelley’s Wonder Woman, but they changed their mind and backed away from that one.

ABC picked up Once Upon a Time (apparently to compete with NBC’s Grimm).

CBS picked up the J.J. Abrams produced Persons of Interest which will star Lost‘s Michael Emerson (not certain yet if this show has any genre elements, though).

FOX picked up the J.J. Abrams produced Alcatraz that will star Lost‘s Jorge Garcia (do I detect some nepotism here?).

The CW will likely pickup the Kevin Williams series Secret Circle and still has Heavenly on their radar.

April just began and we are one month away from this year’s Summer Blockbuster Season, the time of the year when the studios unleash their big-dollar, sfx heavy extravaganzas designed to fill the seats in the theaters and keep movie goers munching on buckets of popcorn and tubloads of soda.  And what a geekapalooza this Summer will be!  Science Fiction and Fantasy has dominated the Box Office this time of the year for well over a decade and this Summer has so many sci fi titles that the geek community just may burst from a collective aneurysm!  Things get started with Marvel’s Asgardian hero Thor jumping to the big screen on May 6th.  But that big news just scratches the surface as he will be followed by a procession of superheroe movies including X-Men: First Class, Green Lantern, and Captain America: First Avenger.  On top of that, we have new movies in the Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Transformers franchises along with a few intriguing new entries like the J.J. Abrams/Steven Spielberg collaboration Super 8 and the Jon Favreau directed Cowboys and Aliens (which stars Harrison Ford).   Plus, we will get a prequel to the Planet of the Apes movies (Rise of the Apes) and a reboot of the Conan franchise.  And there’s even more on top of that!  And you can check it all out at our Summer 2011 Science Fiction and Fantasy Movie Preview Page.  At present count we have over twenty five films included in our preview and that number continues to grow as more films get added to the Summer schedule.  Click on over to browse through the upcoming films, watch some recent trailers, and vote on which films most interest you.  And check back on a regular basis because that schedule is not set in stone, so new movies can pop up and some can change their opening dates.  But start preparing yourself now for the geekapolooza that will be this Summer’s Blockbuster Season because it’s going to be a wild ride!

WARNING!!!  THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS ON THE UPCOMING DEATH OF A FANTASTIC FOUR MEMBER IN COMICS!!!

I just read the “scoop” that Johnny Storm is the member of the FF to be killed off in the current “Three” storyline. For myself, I am a little surprised. As I stated a few weeks ago I never expected it to be the Torch. I just didn’t think it would be him because I didn’t think anyone would care. And I still don’t. Think anyone will really care anyway. Remember a few years ago when they had The Human Torch comic? In the ‘70s he had his own book but it was all just reprints from the old Strange Tales Torch series (which you can now get as a Marvel Essentials volume). In the late ‘90s (I think), he had his own series again but this time it was all new stories and set while he was in high school. Each ish had the coolest cover… they were done by a Japanese artist, I believe, and they were fantastic (no pun intended… well, maybe a little intention there). But I eventually gave up on the book because the stories were kind of stupid and then there was the description in Previews of an upcoming ish where the “uncertain sexuality” of Johnny would be explored. Uncertain? Really? Well, I guess if you can make the Rawhide Kid retroactively gay you can do almost anything.

As for this current storyline, I don’t believe it for a minute. Oh, I have no doubt they’ll kill the Human Torch off, maybe it’ll even be the “real” HT, maybe he’ll even be actually, “really”, truly dead. But I think he’s actually about as dead as Bruce Wayne, or Captain America… or Jason TODD! Or BUCKY FREAKIN’ BARNES!!!! And I have to say that when I read nonsense like Joe Quesada saying that he can’t tell us if or when Johnny will come back… oh, GIVE IT A REST!!! I don’t know when precisely they’ll bring the Matchstick back, or what lame excuse they’ll use (maybe they’ll have Dr. Doom wake up and find Johnny in the shower; there’s that “uncertain sexuality” again) but we all know he’ll be back. And this’ll all be seen as yet another lame attempt to get us all to buy more stuff.

Because that’s all this is, that and another reminder that the House of Ideas has run out of them.

Fringe returns from its Winter hiatus tonight in its much talked about Friday night timeslot. Christopher Lloyd guest stars as Doc Brown meets Walter Bishop! (He’s not really playing the Doc Brown character from Back to the Future, but wouldn’t it be great?) Also, interestingly enough, tonight’s episodes is titled “The Firefly” and we all know about FOX’s infamous cancelling of Joss Whedon’s Firefly from the Friday night death slot about one decade ago. Let’s not let Fringe become a casualty as well!! Be sure to tune in and spread the word.

The Sci Fi-Pocalypse continues!  Just out on the Deadline Hollywood site is an announcement that Syfy has decided to cancel Stargate: Universe, the third live action entry in the Stargate television franchise.  The series has been under-performing in its second season pulling only around a 0.4 to 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and around one million viewers.   Syfy previously cancelled its Battlestar: Galactica prequel series Caprica which had performed even worse than SGU in the ratings in its Tuesday night lead out slot.  SGU has ten episodes remaining for its second season which Syfy will still air as planned in the Spring of 2011.  Once it wraps up, though, this will mark the first time since 1997 that the franchise has not had an ongoing series on the air.

Syfy’s other scripted series currently running, Sanctuary, has also seen a downturn in the ratings this year, but the network still appears committed to that one.  They are currently trying to work out a deal for it to return for a fourth season.   Stay tuned to this site for other announcements about shows currently running and keep track of the most current rating with our weekly column.
